Study helps: The Truth and the Plan – President Dallin H Oaks

This is often called the information age. We have more information at our fingertips than at any other time in the history of the world but not all information has the same value.

President Oaks advises:

‘We need to be cautious as we seek truth and choose sources for that search.’

What is the difference between information and truth?

Why should we be cautious about the sources we use in our search for truth?

What methods should we use when we seek truth about religion?

President Oaks suggests the following:

  • prayer
  • the witness of the Holy Ghost
  • study of the scriptures
  • the words of modern prophets.

In Section II of his talk, President Oaks sets out some ‘restored gospel truths that are fundamental to the doctrine of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.’

What gospel truths does President Oaks highlight in this section?

In Section III President Oaks sets out ‘some applications of these eternal truths, which can be understood only in light of God’s plan.’

‘First, we honor individual agency…

Second, we are a missionary people…..

Third, mortal life is sacred to us……

Fourth, We know that the relationships, identities, and functions of men and women are essential to accomplish God’s great plan…..

Fifth, we also have a distinctive perspective on children……

Finally, we are beloved children of a Heavenly Father, who has taught us that maleness and femaleness, marriage between a man and a woman, and the bearing and nurturing of children are all essential to His great plan of happiness.’

Which of these positions provoke opposition to the Church?

Why?

Where does this opposition come from?

How should we respond to this opposition? (See Section IV)

President Joseph Fielding Smith said:

“Today we are troubled by evil-designing persons who [endeavor] … to destroy the testimonies of members of the Church, and many … are in danger because of lack of understanding and because they have not sought the guidance of the Spirit. … It is a commandment from the Lord that members … be diligent … and study … the fundamental truths of the gospel. … Every baptized person [can] have an abiding testimony. … but [it] … will grow dim and eventually disappear [without] … study, obedience, and diligent seeking to know and understand the truth” (in Conference Report, Oct. 1963, p. 22).

This is even more true today than it was in 1963. It may be salutary to look at where we get our information from, how reliable it is, how beneficial it is and what we do with it. For information, or knowledge, cannot save us.

President Oaks concludes with his testimony:

‘I solemnly testify that the things I have said are true, and they are made possible by the teachings and the Atonement of Jesus Christ, who makes it all possible under the great plan of God, our Eternal Father. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.’
