We do not have to see God to know that he exists. There are many things in life that we know exist even if we have never seen them. Have you ever seen an oxygen molecule or an electron?
The question of the existence of God lies at the core of faith. Faith is an essential element in our pursuit of truth. Hebrews 11:1 teaches us that faith is “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
The scriptures teach us that God is our Heavenly Father, and we are His children. He created us in His image. He wants us to have faith in Him and trust him.
The complex order and design evident in the universe is one of the strongest arguments for the existence of God. We see a level of precision and purpose that attest to a supernatural Creator in everything, from the size of the cosmos to the intricacy of life on Earth, to the order we see on the subatomic realm.
The scriptures affirm this truth, stating, “All things denote there is a God; yea, even the earth, and all things that are upon the face of it, yea, and its motion, yea, and also all the planets which move in their regular form do witness that there is a Supreme Creator” (Alma 30:44)
Natural evidence can serve as a basis for believing, but genuine prayer and personal revelation are essential in our journey to understand whether God exists.
We must approach the question of God’s existence with an open heart and an open mind. God knows us personally and loves us. He will reveal himself, through the Holy Ghost to the sincere seeker of truth.
The Lord has promised that if we ask, through prayer, with a sincere heart, having faith, He will manifest the truth of all things to us through the power of the Holy Ghost (Moroni 10:4). As we do so, we open ourselves to receiving divine confirmation of God’s existence. I know this to be true from personal experience.
My experience is that:
- prayer allows me to communicate with my Heavenly Father – a real loving God
- God does indeed answer prayers
- there is real power in prayer.
In our search for truth, we must keep in mind that the question of God’s existence is not one that can be definitively answered through scientific methods. It requires faith, reason, and personal revelation. Our understanding may be limited at present, but our faith can guide us to a deeper relationship with our Heavenly Father.
I testify that God does indeed exist, that He is our Heavenly Father, and we are His children. He created us in His image. He loves us and hears our prayers. He has heard and answered mine.
