How Can I Feel Closer to God?

This post aims to provide guidance and practical steps to help us feel closer to God in our daily lives.

Many people want to experience a deeper spiritual connection. For our spiritual well-being and growth, having a close relationship with God is crucial. We all need to feel that God knows us and loves us. This post attempts to offer advice and helpful suggestions as to how we can feel more connected to God in your day-to-day activities.

1. Seek Personal Revelation:

In his first General Conference talk after being sustained as the President of the Church, President Nelson challenged us:
“I urge you to stretch beyond your current spiritual ability to receive personal revelation.”

Through sincere prayer, we can communicate with our Heavenly Father and receive guidance, comfort, and inspiration. We can take sincere questions to our Heavenly Father, listen for His gentle promptings and be open to receiving answers through the Holy Spirit.

2. Study the Scriptures:

Elder Bruce R McConkie taught:  ‘I sometimes think that one of the best-kept secrets of the kingdom is that the scriptures open the door to the receipt of revelation.’

We need to recognise that our Heavenly Father WANTS to communicate with us.

Regularly studying the scriptures can deepen our understanding of God’s teachings and help us feel closer to Him. The Book of Mormon, in particular, helps draw us closer to God.

If we set aside time each day to immerse ourselves  in the scriptures, ponder their meaning, and apply their principles in our lives we will find that the words of the prophets and apostles can bring us closer to God.

Elder Robert D. Hales said: “When we want to speak to God, we pray. And when we want Him to speak to us, we search the scriptures.”

3. Attend Church and Partake in the Sacrament:

We have chances to learn, serve, and develop our relationship with God and other Christians when we attend church services and partake in the sacrament. We should actively participate in Sunday worship services, engage in meaningful discussions, and seek opportunities to serve others. We experience the purifying power of Christ’s Atonement and grow closer to God when we partake of the sacrament with a contrite heart.

4. Serve Others:

Jesus Christ taught that when we serve others, we are serving Him. Engaging in acts of selfless service not only blesses the lives of those we help but also brings us closer to God. We will sense the presence of the Saviour in our lives and strengthen our relationship with Him as we imitate His love and compassion.

5. Live the Commandments:

Living the commandments is a practical way to show God how much we love him. Strive to keep the commandments and follow the teachings of Jesus Christ in all aspects of your life. As we align our actions with God’s will, we experience the peace and joy that come from being in harmony with Him. Repentance is an essential part of this process, allowing us to continually draw closer to God as we seek forgiveness and strive to improve.

Conclusion:

Feeling closer to God is a personal journey that requires effort, faith, and a sincere desire to draw near to Him. President Henry B Eyring taught:

‘If you want to stay close to someone who has been dear to you, but from whom you are separated, you know how to do it. You would find a way to speak to them, you would listen to them, and you would discover ways to do things for each other. The more often that happened, the longer it went on, the deeper would be the bond of affection. If much time passed without the speaking, the listening, and the doing, the bond would weaken.’

By seeking personal revelation, studying the scriptures, attending church, serving others, and living the commandments, we can strengthen our relationship with God and experience His love and guidance in our life. This process takes time and patience, but as we persist in our efforts, our connection with God deepens, bringing peace, joy, and a greater understanding of our purpose in life.
