Why do I have so many challenges?

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.

All the king’s horses and all the king’s men

Couldn’t put Humpty together again.

This simple nursery rhyme reminds us that not all illnesses can be cured, not all problems can be resolved. Relationships go sour, jobs are lost, illness strikes, lives are lost and it is all part of the human condition. Adversity is part of our mortal probation, experienced by everyone.

Life is a remarkable journey filled with peaks and valleys, triumphs and trials. It’s not uncommon to wonder why we often find ourselves facing an abundance of challenges. In this post, we will explore the reasons behind the presence of difficulties in our lives and discover the valuable lessons and growth opportunities they offer.

1. Divine Refinement:
It is essential to recognize that challenges can be opportunities for growth and refinement. Trials can forge us into stronger people just as a blacksmith tempers metal through fire. Through our struggles, we can develop virtues such as patience, resilience, and empathy, enabling us to become more Christlike.

Orson F. Whitney said: “No pain that we suffer, no trial that we experience is wasted. It ministers to our education, to the development of such qualities as patience, faith, fortitude and humility. All that we suffer and all that we endure, especially when we endure it patiently, builds up our characters, purifies our hearts, expands our souls, and makes us more tender and charitable, more worthy to be called the children of God … and it is through sorrow and suffering, toil and tribulation, that we gain the education that we come here to acquire and which will make us more like our Father and Mother in heaven” (cited in Spencer W. Kimball, Faith Precedes the Miracle, Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1972, p. 98).

2. Strengthening Our Faith:

Challenges can both bolster and test our faith. We may yearn for more of Jesus Christ’s transforming power in the face of adversity. Problems can show us how much we need heavenly assistance. We are encouraged to seek direction, comfort, and support from our Heavenly Father when confronted with what seem to be overwhelming challenges. As we learn to rely on Him and put our faith in His divine purpose, these difficulties give room for our faith to develop.

3. Learning and Personal Growth:

Every challenge presents an opportunity for learning and personal growth. By embracing our difficulties, we can acquire wisdom, develop new skills, and gain valuable life experiences. Adversity often reveals our hidden strengths and allows us to discover untapped potential within ourselves. As we navigate through challenges with faith and perseverance, we become more resilient and better equipped to face future trials.

Neill Marriott observed: ‘The Lord allows the challenges and tests to come, and when we obey Him, He strengthens us, even enlarging our capacity to obey more fully’.

4. Strengthening Relationships:

Every difficulty offers a chance for development and learning. We can learn knowledge, acquire new talents, and obtain priceless life experiences by embracing our struggles. Adversity frequently brings forth our inner capabilities and enables us to unlock potential. We get stronger and better able to handle tribulations in the future as we tackle difficulties with faith and endurance.

5. The Refining Power of Agency:

Our Heavenly Father respects our agency and allows us to make choices, even when they lead to challenges. Sometimes, the trials we face are consequences of our own actions or the actions of others. However, even in these circumstances, God can use our challenges to teach us important lessons, help us grow, and guide us back to the path of righteousness. He is ever-willing to extend His love and forgiveness as we exercise repentance and strive to align our will with His.

Conclusion:

While it’s natural to question why we encounter numerous challenges, we can find peace and understanding by recognizing their purpose in our lives. Challenges are not meant to break us but to refine and strengthen us. As we embrace these trials with faith, we can grow closer to our Heavenly Father, deepen our relationships, and develop the virtues necessary to fulfill our divine potential. So, let us face life’s challenges with courage, knowing that through them, we can become more like the person our Heavenly Father intends us to be.
