‘Here Am I, Send Me’ – President Susan H Porter – Teaching and Study Helps

Brief Summary of talk

President Susan H. Porter’s “Here Am I, Send Me” is a Christ-centred message directed primarily to children, but with profound application for disciples of every age. Drawing on the pre-mortal council in Heaven and the Saviour’s willing response, “Here am I, send me,” she invites each of us to offer ourselves willingly in the Lord’s service, trusting that He can magnify even our small efforts.

Key quotes and questions to discuss or ponder

‘You were born with gifts. You have a purpose. And you have the ability to make a difference for good.’ (Paragraph 2)

  • What gifts has Heavenly Father already given you?

‘Heavenly Father loves His children so much that He wants each of us to receive all the blessings He enjoys.’ (Paragraph 3)

  • How does the Plan of Happiness enable us to receive all that the Father has?

‘As you try to keep the most important commandments to love God and love others, He will help you grow into the magnificent person you are meant to be! He will help you be happier, learn faster, feel comfort, make friends, and have more opportunities.’ (Paragraph 6)

  • How can we better recognise the divine potential in those around us?

‘Wake up each day with purpose and confidence, knowing that Jesus will walk with you.’ (Paragraph 7)

  • In what ways can Jesus walk with us?

‘Do you remember learning about Jesus feeding more than 5,000 people? Jesus had been teaching people all day, and they were hungry. Somewhere in this large group there was a young boy who had five loaves of bread and two small fishes. He knew that this food could not feed very many people, but he decided to give Jesus what he had.’ (Paragraph 8)

  • What “five loaves and two fishes” can I offer, even if they seem insignificant?

’When you say, “Here am I, send me,” Heavenly Father can take something small and simple and make it great!’ (Paragraph 9)

  • What does “Here am I, send me” mean in my current stage of life?
  • What do you take from the stories  in paragraphs 10-12?

‘When you strive to bring yourself and others closer to Jesus, you will receive blessings now and later. Today you can make choices that will help you change and grow now and prepare you for blessings of love and joy forever.’ (Paragraph 14)

  • How can I help others come closer to Jesus Christ this week?

‘I bear my witness that God, our Heavenly Father, and His Son, Jesus Christ, love you. Because of Heavenly Father’s plan and Jesus Christ’s Atonement, all of us can receive the blessing of living joyfully forever with our families in Their presence.’ (Paragraph 16)

Invitations and application

’I invite you to pray to Heavenly Father and say, like Jesus did, “Here am I, send me.” And then move forward, walking with Him to bring yourself and others to Christ.’ (Paragraph 15)

God does not ask us to offer perfection—He asks us to offer ourselves. As we respond with willing hearts, saying, “Here am I, send me,” He takes our ordinary abilities and accomplishes extraordinary blessings through them, bringing both ourselves and others closer to Jesus Christ.

Additional thoughts

We are all cherished children of a caring Heavenly Father. We lived with Him as his spirit children before we were born on this earth. Because He loves us, God wants to give each of us His greatest blessings, namely immortality and eternal life. Because He loves us, He created a plan for us that would make it possible to receive these blessings.  In this plan, each of us is on an eternal journey that takes us from our premortal life through birth, mortal life, death and life after death. God has provided for our needs on this journey so that when we pass away, we can eventually come back to Him and know the fulness of joy.

‘My beloved brothers and sisters, dear friends, I pray that the Spirit will help you recognize the gifts and talents God has given you. Then, let us, like the faithful servants in the Lord’s parable, increase and magnify them.

The day will come when we stand before our compassionate Father in Heaven to give an account of our stewardship. He will want to know what we did with the gifts He gave us—in particular, how we used them to bless His children. God knows who we truly are, who we are designed to become, and so His expectations for us are high.’ (Elder Dieter F Uchtdorf, General Conference, October 2025)

The songwriter Colin Vearncombe sang: ‘It’s a cold hard road and we walk it alone.’ But we don’t need to walk it alone!’

The writer of Ecclesiastes said:

“Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.” (Ecclesiastes 4 :9-10)

Our Saviour will help us up.
